I'm tossing up about getting my 30yr old microwave repaired or buy a new one. I like my old microwave, it's been good to me but I'll probably have trouble getting parts for it so may look at getting a new one... just I have no idea what to look for in new ones these days.
Any recommendations on brands and functions both good and bad?

What are your current features you have ATM, you like the most, all mine are from the bins , current one is a yankies confection style one, even with the yankie adapter but works fine, never used the roasting or the grille bit , but works for warming up left over tucker

Gail I'm not able to help with plain microwaves, I have had Sharp Convection/Microwave for the last 23 years and would'nt have any other. My late husband and my brother who were both Electronic's tecks said brands no matter as the motors are all the same ,its only the cabinets that vary brand to brand.

My Hubby used to put a leakage tester on ours on a regular basis.I have never replaced door seals. The secret is ,always close your microwave oven door gently ,slamming the door as I see so many people do will wear the seal quickly.

I meant to get back here last night
The only thing wrong with the old one is the safety switch that will only start it if the door is closed... it won't start at all. I see so many around these days that are lucky to last out their warranty that I am looking for a reliable brand. My old one is a big Sanyo... it was top of the line when it was new... my sister had it originally then she moved to WA so my Mum bought it from her (my sister bought another one the same when she came back), then when my Mum died I inherited it. It has been going strong ever since until a couple of weeks ago. I have been using a little one we had originally but it is so small that it can nearly fit into the other one... only just fits a small dinner plate in it
All I want is one to cook the vegies and warm up food... and defrost the meat as I never remember to get any out of the freezer early enough Just needs to be big enough to use for a family of 6 and more when the others are visiting.

Gail if you are interested in one that's not white or white inside that goes yellow with age or stained have a look at the Samsung black and SS one model ME6104ST as it has a grey ceramic enamel interior we paid $210 for this one
We had our last Samsung a little different more SS on the door for only five years due to a certain person blowing it up by forgetting that he put something whole in it without stabbing it first its exterior/interior was as clean as the day we bought it..They wanted $150 to fix best to buy a new one loved it to so bought it again.
Microwaves are so cheap today no need to pay big bucks like I did for the Panasonic genius way back in the last century who's safety switch went twice.. It made a good nesting box for the cooks..

Any colour but white suits me The old one is brown but white inside... always a pain to clean the inside. My little one I am using now is white all over and shows up every speck. The main thing is size though.
I've been looking online at reviews but doesn't seem taht many around... not in the usual review places I look.
