Came across this bromeliad flowering for the first time yesterday. I've been wondering when it was going to start as we've had it a couple of years now. It is a bigger grower, each plant is about half a metre wide.

At long last the Monstera deliciosa is starting to flower. The flower hasn't opened yet and then another 12mths to wait for fruit but it is progress at least

Yes. I'm not that keen on them but will eat them but want the kids to try them, also my mother-in-law loves them.

They have such pretty flowers Gail, your brom also looks great , half a metre wide

My basic weeding rule: if they grow in rows they're flowers;
if they don't they're weeds.

Thanks.

Richard, that's why they call them the Fruit Salad plant as the taste resembles a fruit salad. The fruit starts to ripen from the bottom and you can only eat the part that is fully ripe as the unripe bit contains oxalic acid. Here are a couple of articles and pictures about it

My mother used to eat them all the time, she loved them. They are fine as long as you wait for the skin to fall off and only eat the exposed bit.

The flower is open today. It is between 20 and 30cm long.

Oh wow! That's spectacular Gail! I'd love to taste that fruit, and thought I had a Monstera Deliciosa but it turned out to be a Philodendron. Same family I would imagine though.

They must send them all down your way Cheryl as I have never seen the fruit in a shop, only ever seen them as homegrown.

It is related to philodendron, Val.

I wouldn't want to eat the flower Cheryl... it is poisonous
