Nice colour I like it and hope mine look as good whenever they decide to flower.

I found out recently this is not a Ginger but Dichorisandra thyrsiflora. Thats the trouble with Sunday Markets they have no idea of the names of plants they sell.

MA. That Dichorisandra thyrsiflora flower is so georgeous . I Googled it and got some lovely pics of it growing in a large clump ,so lovely . does it seed well.If it does I'd love a few seeds. On several sites they are still calling it a ginger, then in small print say not a true ginger , These are people selling the plant so I reckon the plant would sell better as Ginger than Dichorisandra .Pitta.

I think years ago Dichorisandra used to be used as a replacement plant for the gingers before the gingers became easily available for those of us out of the tropics. I remember them when I first got into plants many years ago. They were also a tougher plant and easier to grow than gingers.
Besides ginger is just a common name for many types of plants - alpinia, cucurma, kaempferia, zingiber, costus and others which I can't think of right now.

Cheryl I have no idea if they get out of control I will let you know if it starts running.
No not the same sandals Cheryl as that was about 8 years ago.. I would have just picked a seed pod hanging from the tree this time. It does not get as much water as the other Tropicals do I dont know if its water-wise though.
Gwen its the first time it has flowered so I will keep a look out for any seeds..
Gail I call lots of plants Gingers also. You wrote earlier on you have some, have yours flowered yet..

Mine haven't flowered yet and I'm not positve that they are Dichorisandra but I presume so. I bought them from the markets and when I asked if they knew the name they just said they thought it was a ginger and thought it had blue flowers. I only paid $5 for 3 plants so it didn't really worry me what sort of ginger they were

No it would not worry me at that price either.
Gail looking back through my handwritten gardening book I bought that plant 13th January last year so maybe it takes about a year in the ground before it flowers, depending on the Season of course
