I am soooooooooooo jealous. I have 10 tomato plant - several over 6 feet high - with lots of green tomatoes and THEY ARE NOT RIPENING. Nor are the strawberries fruiting and the plums are not ripening and the corn is not ready. It is very very frustrating. Just not hot enough I guess. Every day is in the mid 20's and often overcast.

i am learning how to love tomatoes, MA...tho i must admit...i overdosed today and that is a setback. turns out...if there is enough sweetness to it...then i no longer gag on the seed and gel. those yeller ones are very meaty and sweet. but them there red 'uns are very seedy and gelly and still my favies...cuz they is made 'o sugar.

looks great tessa. are the ones at 9oclock kimberly?
Im getting frustrated too. my one and only tomato with fruit on it has been struck by disease so I had to remove a heap of foliage. Im trying to push it along until the fruit ripen which is taking forever! the others havent even set fruit yet
my strawberries are doing great, except something keeps chewing on the ripening fruit, I think it's slaters
at least the capsicums are setting some fruit, theyre my last hope! |

Excellent job Tessa and far better than what I have at the moment. I actually had to buy some to make sure I had enough tomatoes for the xmas period There is no comparison between bought and homegrown - I sliced a bought one and I don't think there was one drop of juice that came out of it, they are just so dry, hard and no flavour. On the other hand, with the homegrown - tomatoes how they should be - juicy, soft and sweet.
Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to use it in a fruit salad.

We are still getting tomatoes off the plants here, the five in the bowl now dont have those tell tale little pin marks on them, so maybe no fruit fly in them..
They are very hard to grow here in the warm and wet weather, so much better at other times of the year..

MA...i sew little tule bags and slip them over the tommies. works a treat keeping the fruitfly off.
gail...them big ones in the middle were so juicy...we were leaning towards calling them watery!
ota. ota ota ota ota. how far of a drive from bullcreek are you? maybe santa will be *extra* nice to you this year.

oh...forgot to answer your question, ota. no. LOL.
okay...with a little more clarity... the tomato at 3:30 is a kimberely. the red tomatoes at 9 o'clock were supposed to be 'earl's faux'...but they turned out the wrong colour (red instead of pink) and had the wrong shaped leaves (regular instead of potato) and so i've very selfishly named these after myself...'tessie's treat'. now if you have been a very very good girl this year...you may not only have a few ripe tomatoes for a chrissy treat...but also some seeds for this one. this is the best tomato on my block so far.

Thanks Tessa I have told the Assistant gardener. Who gave me the strangest look as he knows he would have to sew them himself

LOL, yeah rub it in tessa. Im a fair way from you, it's a shame Im not heading down that way over chrissy or I could relieve you of your terrible burden
In my defence I did get a very late start but the volunteer toms are turning out to be a dud. The one with fruit on it seems to be waiting for every tom to mature before it's going to let them ripen but it keeps setting more fruit, what a conundrum. I've pulled a few off already and theyre ripening up nicely in the cupboard I've got about 10 or so heirloom seedlings going now and as soon as theyre ready Im going to just yank out the volunteers and stick the new ones in, Im done with the volunteers after this, I want to see some action out there LOL
MA you seem to have a lot of success with the volunteers, maybe theyre a different variety to over here, but do yours ripen progressively or hold out like mine seems to be doing? |
