Hi folks, Although I've been a member for a while, I have only posted here once, and as I don't like the idea of remaining a "dirt poker" I thought I might aim a bit higher. Many of you will know me from elsewhere, and my reputation preceeds me. I grow many different varieties of iris, from imported seed and from rhizome, and also from my own hybridisation efforts. I also grow roses, vegies, fruit trees, and as much else as I can cram into my 3 acres here. I spend much of my day sitting at my computer doing my day job so I go looking for interesting gardening stuff on the net. Fortunately I'm my own boss, or I would lose my job. Cheers Jan

Fantastic Jan - great to see you here. Love to have another iris expert here!
I need lots of advice about irises as I love them - passionately - but I live in 'bog heaven' of a mostly sodden 5 acres and some of my irises rot away sadly. I also have lots of horse manure to dispose of every few days and gather it in an otto bin and dump on my roses and some of it spills over to where there might be irises ... I am now trying to surround the bearded irises with smallish rocks and moving them to dryer parts of the garden. However the Dutch irises and Siberian irises and Japanese irises multiply like there is no tomorrow. I like these but I love the bearded irises ... Did not mean to highjack your thread but I may have ... oops ... but a BIG welcome Jan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hijack away Pamela, and thanks all for the welcome. Will start a thread on irises shortly. People seem to forget about them during the Autumn and winter, but there is much to do if you want a really good display. Cheers, Jan |

Just a couple Mary-Anne. I grow an old named one called .....um...um....Ok ...it's gone for the moment. I think it's Black Gamecock. Also a species one Iris brevicaulis - a soft blue. Both are fairly low growing, and grow over our septic drainage area happily mixed together and unrecognisable until they bloom - LOL

Hello Jan, Welcome of course, I feel a bit silly saying welcome as I am very new here myself, but I will go out on a limb here and offer you a very large, warm welcome. Iris, how lovely . Have only grown dutch iris before....and not terribly well I might add....as for the "stick em just near the top of the soil type of iris" (bearded I think), well I managed to rot them in no time flat. Perhaps with some gentle knowledgeable guidence I could be prodded into trying them again. Some pictures of beautiful blooms always encourages me as well!!!!!!! nudge nudge....hint, hint. Looking forward to some pictures and some advice...so welcome Jan!!!

Hi Jan nice to see you again. Hope you aren't a dirt poker for too long though you will have to try hard to beat Mary-Anne
Iris are so pretty but I don't know a lot about them. We have a few dutch iris that come up every year (hopefully again this year ) and I have some Japanese Iris that Pamela sent me which I have recently split up into 3 and planted (must take a photo of them soon), and I bought a white iris of some sort from the markets last season but have forgotten the name. When (if ) it flowers I'll post a pic and hopefully you can ID it for me.

That Black Gamecock looks a nice one Jan. I googled and got colours from blue to black. So I guess I will have to wait till yours flowers until I see the exact colour. I only have the one and its purple I may buy some more this year..

hi ed, some of us originally came from a forum called gardenweb (a US run website), that's where some of us know her from
but the Australian leg of the forums sort of fell apart a while ago |

Cranberries ... hmmm ... I will have to think on this. Do they like bog? My bog sage is ... ridiculous. Loves this place to death. I could dig up 300 plants and give away but don't know anyone who wants them ... so may have to throw them away.
Love to hear of bog candidates ... will google cranberries ...
