I thought about writing Cucubita up top but if you are just starting off you would have no idea that Zucchini, Pumpkins and Squash belong to the Cucubita family I know I didn't..

Plenty of Info on this link below also. http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s1975765.htm

To give you a idea on what flower is Female and Male below is the Zucchini.

The Female Pumpkin Flower:

The Male Pumpkin Flower:

Great idea Sunny

those are great shots, sunny, thanks. of course...i knew the difference ...but i only learned that two years ago when i had a problem with my zukes not getting pollinated. now i do the deed myself every morning. my favourite morning ritual is to make a coffee, carry it out to the pumpkin patch, and 'paint' all the blossoms with my artist's brush.
a nice way to spend ten minutes.

sunny...when those blossoms open...it would be great to take pictures of how things are different inside each one too. the female has a few sections inside, and for fertilization to be effect...pollen must be applied to each section. if you are able to get those pics...it would be good to edit your original post to insert them. then we can make this thread a 'sticky' as a stand-alone lesson for other veg gardeners.

Thanks Tessa..First morning I forgot. Next morning it rained and I had a raindrop on the lens and lots of the photo's were blurry, another day no male flowers then today I get some pics of one and when I put them on the computer there is a brown caterpillar asleep around the stamen. I got some pics of male and female side by side opened zucchini flowers but the jolly male is out of focus.. There is always tomorrow morning.. Trouble is they shut up shop early here maybe it too hot..

Can I ask a stupid question? Do you have to hand pollinate? If I have lots of bees and butterflies will they do it, or do I need to do it? I have got several seedlings coming up for zucchini, pumpkin and cucumber. Last year the pumpkins got to about 4inches and then the birds got them - but that was a self sown pumpkin and I only had 2-3 pumpkins on it.

I have never needed to hand pollinate as we have plenty of visiting bees, it is only when you don't have many bees around. You can do it anyway to ensure a good crop though.

BTW, it isn't a stupid question as I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who don't know - I didn't know at first either... besides how does anyone learn if they don't ask - so don't hesitate to ask.

I just had to edit this as I made a big mistake... I put "it is a stupid question" - I left the 'nt off - sorry

LOL gail. you meany.

umm...i ALWAYS hand pollinate. just cuz it's fun! plus you can make some amazing hybrids, if you want.
but also...you can ensure that every female blossom becomes a pumpkin.
you friends will love you!
