I had a quick look for that info on tyres but haven't found it yet, I'll keep looking though. This one, though not a scientific one, explains it better than I did http://www.users.on.net/~arachne/tyres.html

You did better than me Gail I went through that many posts on those two other forums looking and could not find them.. That has eased my mind a bit as it would take a long time for those tyres to break down..

I didn't think the seeds were going to germinate as it has been much colder than usual the last couple of weeks but last week I noticed one lot has actually germinated. It took a good 2 weeks instead of the usual 7 days or so. The basil seedling isn't looking good though, nearly dead I think. I haven't taken a photo yet but will in a couple of days.

Yes Gail I think the mornings are to cold for germination I had just about given up on the sugar snap peas that I planted three weeks ago but I noticed today they are finally starting to pop up..Like yours seems they need just that bit longer in the cold..
I have planted a punnet of basil seedlings weeks back and they are struggling along also, mind you some nasty is having a ball chewing all the leaves so that's not helping either.
Gail have you thought about putting a cover on the tyre overnight it may keep the heat in a little longer, and would probably keep the cold out too..

The only trouble with covering it would be remembering to uncover it in the morning rush
Here is a pic of the little plants. I put 2 or 3 seeds in a couple of spots with intentions of pulling out the weakest ones. I will see how they go for a while before I do. I put a few grass clippings around them when I mowed last weekend to try and help keep them warmer.

cute little buggers. my green zebras have come up in the greenhouse. i'll try to post a pic a little later today.
you know i'm a big fan of the grass clippings. the only thing i worry about with the tomatoes is that it will be too much N and you won't get any fruit. so maybe later you can remove the clippings and give them a good dose of potash.
what variety of tomato were these again?

I have been so busy lately I haven't thought about next spring yet but they sound good. I've haven't tried brandywines yet. I was going to ask you for some of those cherrys you had in the swap post too but forgot Too much for my poor little brain lately
I thought about that with the grass clippings, especially with the weeds and green stuff I put in the tyre first before the compost, etc. I'll see how they grow for a while, I don't think they are going to be too quick with at this time of year anyway.

Update on the green zebras.
I am surprised the tomatoes even survived this extra cold winter but they did. It has been a struggle though as even the days have been colder so didn't warm up the tyre like I hoped it would. They were also uprooted a couple of times when still small by the bandicoots after worms
Here they are, the tyre next to them has carrots in it.

The water will only sit there for a day or so after it stops raining and the plants are in raised beds. That area which was levelled when the house was built and was sloped slightly backwards but the water never gets more than a couple of cms deep and soaks in quickly.

Another update on the winter tyre garden. Not as successful as I had hoped but it was a strange winter anyway. The green zebra has started producing fruit but it will still be a while until it is ready for picking. I've had tomatoes nearly continuously (except for when the cows ate half the plants) over winter from my other tomatoes which where planted in february or march and they are still keeping me supplied.

The plant is healthy enough and the carrots beside the tomato are doing well. I've been picking the carrots to thin them out for the last month or so. I might try it again next winter but put the tyre in a warmer spot and start the seeds off a little earlier.
These are the tomatoes from my other plants which have been growing since early in the year.
