Gail, I have seen these holes in my vege garden and other places and wondered what made them. I had thought that they might be responsible for the eating of leaves on my potatoes, but no so from what I read in your thread and the www site you offered. I am still left with possums; but wonder what else can destroy bushes overnight. I have seen possums in my vege garden at night.

The bandicoots will dig the holes and are usually don't hurt anything except when they uproot small plants looking for worms and grubs. I don't care if they stick with lawn and curl grubs outside the vegie garden.

Possums like fruit & vegies, young shoots and flowers but will also eat eggs and I have heard they will even eat young chicks in nests but not sure how true that is. You could try providing a nest box for them and leaving some fruit, etc out for them everyday in the hope that they will leave the other stuff alone but it would mean doing it daily

Hares and roos will nip the tops out of small newly planted trees and shrubs, often just above ground level. My parents had this trouble when they planted hundreds of native seedling trees on their block years ago - many were nipped off just above the ground though most of the plants did regrow.

I don't really know the best way to stop the plants being damaged by any native animal as we want the animals but not the damage. Temporary cages or screens around newly planted shrubs and fencing around vegie gardens is about all you could do.

If you do a search for "possum deterrents" there are plenty of ideas. A good site seems to be this one which has tested several deterrents

And this page on the same site has other problem wildlife.

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to use it in a fruit salad.

A ounce of common sense is worth more than a ton of intelligence.

Also just found this, a much cheaper and easier way to fence the vegie garden

Thanks again Gail. That looks like it is quite inexpensive.
