Not that there is a lot happening as I haven't done anything with the vegies for weeks.
I planted some lettuce seedlings last week, just hope they hurry up as I only have 4 or 5 lettuce left that are ready for picking.

Silverbeet are growing well... if the kids would stop picking too much for the chooks. It is for both the chooks and us but the kids love feeding it to the chooks and don't worry if there is enough left for anyone else.

In between tomato crops at the moment. The colder weather has slowed the new ones down and there isn't any old ones left so waiting on these.

I planted red onions a while ago, they are doing well. I did also plant some browns just before these but we had pump trouble shortly after sowing the seed and they missed out on a couple of waterings so didn't grow.

Still getting a few capsicum though not as big as before. The plant didn't like last weeks cold -1C mornings so I don't expect too many more.

And the dwarf peach tree is still flowering well

Disappointed in the sugar snap peas this year. I've tried three times now and only keep getting 3 or 4 plants up. The kids eat what peas do come on before I even see them

hmmm. i'm glad i'm only dealing with rats stealing my produce, and not kids!
it's all still looking good, gail. better than nothing. i have to say that i'm surprised i'm getting as many capsicums in winter as i did in summer...but the best thing about the winter ones is that you can actually eat the whole thing and not need to nibble your way around the grubs inside them.
my silverbeet is not happening this year as the rats have taken a fancy to them. i've been laying out baits for weeks now...and they ARE being taken...but they're washing them down with generous serves of silverbeet, it seems. arg!

Looking good Gail.. We have so many lettuce I took some to my daughter this morning and a pumpkin twenty plus still in the garage..
Where did you get the seeds for the onions Gail online or the shops I know its the wrong time for planting but if I am still around next Autumn I will make use of that potato bed..
Could you Please give me the name of them..Thanks
The hot weather the past few days has ripened up lots of our tomatoes, I had to buy some Roma last week to tide us over I don't eat them they are terrible..
I am so glad we don't get rats here Tessa , its enough with what we have here now without them as well

What wonderful looking veggies Gail. You put me to shame!! Love the onions! Your kids are not going to need much convincing about what is important in life! Bet they all end up with veggie gardens as adults!
Tessa the quickest thing with rats are Talon baits - blue squares that you need to remove from the packaging with a disposable plastic glove on your hand so no human smell - smear with peanut butter (I keep a jar outside in my chemical cupboard for this purpose) and place with plastic glove on at a height that Xena cannot reach. It will work .... believe me ... I am very mindful of these little animals as I have a lot of food outside in bins for chooks/ horses and I cannot have any rodents about because of my paying guests. I do feel sorry for them as I look at a little micey in the garage and they are so cute ... but I have no choice. I was put onto Talon by the pest exterminator that I called in when the droppings turned out to be bats.

hi pamela...i'm using blue baits that council provides for free...and they work pretty good. really, my problem is that i stopped for awhile...and so have a backlog of rats to kill off. i don't like it either. actually...i'm really torn about doing it.
gail...here's the last of my green zebras for the year. they got progressively smaller...while the capsicums have gotten progressively bigger, and definitely less buggy!

We see the occasional rat and hear them sometimes in the ceiling but luckily they don't seem to eat the vegies. We have a natural form of pest control in the roof now so don't need to bait. More about this pest control on another post soon
I haven't got any green zebras left now, the last one gave up after 18mths. I will have to get some more seeds planted soon. That capsicum is big! So far we haven't had any problems with grubs in them summer or winter. I don't know what sort mine is as is was from a mixed packet of sweet ones. It is normally a long tapered one but the last few have been smaller and curled. I still have a few little lipstick ones on a bush too that has been growing for 2 years now.
Mary-Anne, most of the seeds I buy are Eden seeds but I forgot to order onion seed last time so just picked these up cheap from the local discount store. They are Mr Fothergill's brand - Early Californian Red.

Thanks for that Gail, just one more question when did you plant them and how long before they are ready to dig up any idea..

Mary-Anne, normally I have it written down when I plant things but mustn't have this time I think they were planted towards the end of March or early April. Onions generally take 4 to 5mths, the tops will die off and fall over when ready for picking but they can be picked earlier if using straight away, just won't keep as long. I will start using some of these soon as spring onions to thin them out.
