Milkweeds or cotton bush are a common weed around here.

Why is it that weeds have pretty flowers

They do have one good point - they are the only plant the Wanderer Butterfly lays its eggs on. Of course one of the kids had to find a caterpillar which is now, unknowingly to me at the time , a resident in a bottle... at least until later this morning when it is going to go back on the plant.

Oh I have seen that plant out and about Gail and had no idea what its name was, its good that we can always depend on you for all kinds of info.. You are right about weeds though they always have such pretty flowers.

Nice looking caterpillar there also, I guess it will miss the great outdoors so a good idea to put it outside.

But not on the roses Gail

Those caterpillars only eat milkweed so your roses are safe Mary-Anne

I agree, there are a lot of plants out there that we call weeds that have such pretty flowers

My basic weeding rule: if they grow in rows they're flowers;
if they don't they're weeds.

When we were kids and came across these plants we used to have fun popping the seed pods Another name for them is cotton bush because of the pod and the hundreds of fluffy seeds inside.
