thanks barbara...i think the battle with ants here in perth is not to be won.
i agree with ed...i like to leave them alone...but i really can't have them taking over the pantry. thankfully, they had one-track minds. wait. they DO. *collective consciousness*

cranky people live longer. i'm going to live forever!

When ants are in normal numbers they are fine but before we had the rain at the end of last year, we were over-run with them though luckily they stayed outside. Usually ants are kept under control by regular heavy rain flooding their nests occasionally but with the prolonged dry weather we had they bred up to nearly plague proprtions. It got to the stage that the we didn't like going into certain areas of the yard as they would run all over our feet and up our legs. The kids wouldn't even play outside somedays because of them. I ended up baiting their nests occasionally to keep their numbers down a bit... not that I think it really made much difference. Since the rain though things have been much better outside.

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to use it in a fruit salad.

A ounce of common sense is worth more than a ton of intelligence.

I agree kito, in normal numbers they arent a problem and I've always left the ants alone, then about 2 years ago our front yard got overtaken with ants, you couldnt even walk out there without them crawling all over your legs and biting you we had new mounds appearing daily in all the paving and I've tried all sort of powders and sprays to knock the numbers down. I was doing some fixing up of the paving a while back and wherever i pulled them up there was like a big network of tunnels underneath, it was like our whole front yard had become one big ant complex. theyre infuriating things when they get out of hand but I havent found one thing that is all that effective so far.
