My son found this fruit down in the gully in the paddock yesterday. I haven't seen anything like it here before. I'm not sure where he found it but when my son gets home from school we will go down the gully and see if we can see a tree it could have come from.
It is about the size of a small apricot, pinkish/red colour on the outside and white around the large seed. It looks a little like a peach but has two creases going around the fruit dividing it in quarters unlike a peach with only one crease - it definitely isn't a peach, the seed is different. I don't think the fruit is fully ripe as it doesn't have much smell.

The tennis ball is there for size comparison. The bruising on the fruit is from being in my son's pocket

Interesting Gail I have never seen that one before sorry I cannot help.
The birds here often leave strange seeds or fruit too.

Thanks for trying. I thought it might be some sort of lillypilly but I haven't been able to find many pics of the different fruits to compare. Does anyone know a site that has pics like this?

I don't know what it is either. I would have to see the plant. That fruit would be too big for a lilly pilly wouldn't it?

I meant lillypilly as a general term for any of the syzygium, acmena, eugenias and similar. Some of them can get large fruit. I haven't been down to the gully to look as it was raining the other afternoon and we were too busy yesterday. I will try and get down in the next day or so.

Thanks Mary-Anne but I'd already thought of that one as we have a jambos planted though ours hasn't fruited yet. Here is a pic of jambos - rose apple. http://www.bijlmakers.com/fruits/roseapple.htm
I was thinking possibly Syzygium fibrosum but I can't find a clear enough picture of the fruit. We have one of these planted too but it hasn't fruited yet either. We actually have quite a few lillipillies but apart from Acmena smithii, S australe and S zeherri none of the others have flowered yet.

Okay I found the tree though still don't recognise it. I couldn't get a picture of the actual tree as the sun was in a bad spot but I broke some leaves off. I couldn't find any flowers but plenty of fruit.

I actually found a few of them obviously some came up from seed near the original plant. THey are small trees and the biggest one is about 4 to 5m. The bigger one has a fairly neat shape, taller rather than wider (about 2 to 3m), the others are growing in heavy shade so are scrawnier. It would be much easier to ID if I could find some flowers might have to wait until then.
