today we had a contest between a nice plump brandywine:

and a plumper 'big streaked' (not so streaked...but kinda big!)

and after careful consideration...i made my choice:

gone, but not forgotten. 8)

Wow! To me the flavour of the yellow ones is not the flavour I seek - that real overripe red tomato flavour that I adore. I also like tommies on toast with some salt - only thing I put salt on and it is not so bad for one a little bit as we need the iodiene in salt - if you buy the right one. Had that for breakfast.

They both look delicious. If I have to slice up a few tomatoes I will choose different colours and have them mixed.

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to use it in a fruit salad.

I just like them plain without salt or pepper to get the full flavour as I find both disguise the flavour of foods.

Mary Anne don't you eat tomatoes either - ie the "IF". What veggies do you like?

I like most salad veggies Pamela, I would eat a salad every night if I did not have to cook for Tony lots of time I have a salad for dinner if he has sausages or pork chops two things that don't appeal to me I will eat sausages on the BBQ though with salad.

Tomatoes here are not the best even the ones we grow, I blame the assistant gardener for that I reckon he waters them wrong and that's why they are full of gel or all watery no taste what so ever I do eat tomatoes Pamela I buy a 670gm bottle of sun dried tomatoes in oil every two weeks.. YUM And I eat them all by myself too, little piggy me as Tony only likes bland food where I like spicy and Hot as in curries. Would you believe all he ever ate up till we got married 22 years ago was meat and 3 veg and roast. Now I have got him eating casseroles, fried rice, stir fries, spaghetti all kind of pasta dishes but he wont go near the curries or chili dishes so I make them in bulk for me and freeze in containers and the same for him with casseroles as they are too bland for me..

I think my problem does back to when I was a child my step-mum used to boil the living daylights out of the veggies in a aluminum saucepan loaded with salt, the peas, cabbage and brussel sprouts used to go grey and taste yucky I am not a lover of cooked veggies even though I only lightly steam them. Can I say I am getting sick of Kent pumpkin

I could live on lettuce, radish, sp onions, beetroot, olives, gherkins, cukes, corn and stir fries. I love leb cukes and we are picking about six every couple of days, raw carrots I wont eat them cooked yes even decent tomatoes which don't exist up here. I like all peas especially sugar snap and grow lots when the weather is cooler. I like raw cauli too but not steamed but I will eat broccoli steamed guess I have different taste buds to some. And I probably only eat about six potatoes a year just to try out new ones..

So that me unique but we all are as we get older don't you think.
And I say enjoy what you want in moderation as we are a long time dead

I like spicy too but my absolute favourite of all time is lightly cooked swede (the yellow one from globe vegie that is cream with touch of purple on the stem - I call this "swede") with butter on it an some tasty potatoes and some green veggies similarly cooked. I could eat that every night and in fact I did, for 18 years as I refused to eat anything that was in my picture books from about age 2 I believe and won out over a very bossy and not very understanding family - I dug my heels in so to speak from that tender age - and many trips being taken to yet another doctor who might force me to eat meat. So mum cooked veggies for me every night and to this day, lovely fresh buttery swede has to be the nicest thing I can imagine eating along with some other veggies.

I cook it occasionally for myself. Tonight I am making a frittata of some of my own veggies, my own eggs and some swiss mushrooms, cream, some sun-dried tomatoes and grated cheese I just bought. I will make 2 and will give one to my guests that arrive on Saturday as a welcome as they have been here before and might be sick of some of the other things I cook.

Pouring with rain. Mud everywhere. I am too depressed about the mess to look at the rain gauge - please Hughie just send it to Shelly!

Nice Tessa, love the scales! I gave up on my tommies. They just couldn't hack the sustained hot weather. I never even got a brandywine as they got sunburned and then rotted

I got one of my browns at 217gms though The brown was definitely the best plant for me with Green Zebra second and The (not so) big orange third. The green zebra was real interesting...almost a smokey flavour. Big losers were German Lineage and Stumpy.

I hope you enjoyed the fruits of your labour!

i've just got one german lineage coming on now. it has been very lazy about setting fruit. that's great to hear that you got a 200+gr brown. those have been lizzie's favourite so far.
green zebra has been fairly productive for me...and (very small) bit orange not such a good one, but i've restarted a seedling to see if it just didn't like the heat. i did like the taste of it.

by far...the biggest winner has been 'canabec super' which is still pumping them out!
maybe next year...that's all i'll grow! LOL.

Cannabec was ok. He certainly set some fruit which is a good thing butI found the flavour so-so. Not bad but not one to jump up and down on the taste buds.

How was brandywine? or do you need to ask Liz

we both liked brandywine!!! i liked canabec better than liz did...but hey, i'm biased. it's a tomato from 'the old country'. LOL.
at least it produced!
really...just green zebra and canabec produced...but i've got others on the go now that are looking promising.
i've got some babies sprouting right now...are you interested in 'shoulder season' tomatoes? i'm going to have a go at bringing in a decent autumn crop.

Thanks Tess but I'm going to let the veggies lie fallow for a bit now.

I'm going to get set up properly for winter. I'm going to knock a space in my wall and hang a gate. I'll put a couple of extra courses on the wall and render and paint the lot. Then it's some raised beds, proper drip irrigation, compost bins and compacted paths for the inside. No more sandpit!!
