mare placenta. Plant on the left was planted over Kevarose and Lochie's placenta. Good soil and the two on the right are productive but not as big as the plant on the left. All Bunnings specials @ $3 each - roma and grosse lisse. I am enjoying the tommies.

Now all can go and find this great fertiliser product ... if only ... :-)) Take one mare, teaher how to get on a horse float, buy an expensive horse float, take said mare to stallion, pay money, leave her for 3 weeks, find no result, repeat again in a year's time, wait 11 months, watch birth in raptures, watch delivery of placenta, gather it up and dig a hole and then buy a $3 tomato and watch it GROW!

Sounds reasonable! But I am scared of horses. :) Beautiful animals though! I have often marvelled at how young children feel so relaxed around them. I guess it is just a learnt thing?

Depends on the horse Daniel. Leaving food out of it, the mare in this photo is the most loving animal I have ever seen. Hasn't a mean bone in her body. Adores kids and has had hundreds on her back. She has never had a bad experience with people and that is the secret. Her foal is the same - he trusts people. They are amazing and you can be relaxed around them if they are treated right. They never forget, like elephants so do the wrong thing and it will come back to haunt you one day. I am having fun growing tomatoes. Amazed at the difference mare placenta produces though!

Certainly does make a difference Pamela... a bag of blood and bone might be cheaper, easier and quicker though Any breeding stables around your way? Even the other two tommies look good.

Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to use it in a fruit salad.

I have heard that in the 'olden' days, before Ethics Committees and freezing of placenta for tissue repair, that occasional obstetricians (maybe ones with enough time to have a veggie garden) used to be known to take the placenta out of the medical garbage bin and take it home for their veggie gardens. Now I know why. There must be more in it than blood and bone as the other tommies have had that. Don't know any breeding stables but if I hear of another foal, I will ask for the placenta. Hang on, there are calves being born across the road all the time ....

And here I am just being (lovingly) envious that you can grow veges without a cage to lock out the possums!

Dare I say buried possums would make a great fertiliser as well

And no, I would not hurt an animal, it's just a joke but if you did happen to find one gone to possum heaven...

Good advice. There are possums up in the bush on my hill (as I found one drowned in my dam one day before I put an escape log in) and also in the front acre with a few hundred gum trees but they do not come near the house as there are no trees near the house except one tilia that is not connected to other trees. It means that all my rose and veggie gardens are possum free. It was not my design but I like it. It also means the pool does not get leaves in it. But it can be stinking hot! Hoping the tilia will do the job of cooling down as it gets bigger (it is a type of oak).
