Tessa, I reckon it is just damage from the sun. Happens to mine occasionally especially if I tie up a branch that has been hanging down and the leaves underneath that were in the shade get burnt.

yeah...i'm starting to calm down now that none of the other plants are showing any symptoms...and the affected plant seems to be recovering. i tell you....it really put the fear in me!!! i'll need to be ready for the day it does happen, tho, as i've got so much invested in the tomatoes this year...even if it is just emotional investment.

I've got everything in tessa. Just a matter of if it can get through this hot spell we are having. You did say to make life hard for the plants to get them established and it looks like the weather is co-operating!
The seddlings all had great root development you'll have to share your potting up mix... |

i was surprised by the roots too! the truth is...it was the crappiest, lowest grade potting mix ever. just sand and ground up bark. really seems to work!

I like that philosophy! I tend to just stick things in the ground and hope ... and often all I do is hope and nothing grows but sometimes .... |

Using lousy potting mix sort of makes sense in one way as the roots will spread more out looking for food. In a good mix the roots have everything they need so don't need to spread. Don't know if this is right but something to think about.

Some Tomatoes will grow in the worst mix/soil strange that. One year I planted seeds in the left over mix out of all my old pots and they germinated I was I have not done it since though.

Hi Guys,
The tomato plants all seem to be coming along well with the first set of flowers coming through on some varieties.
Interesting note so far is that the brandywine is the only plant not to have been assaulted by the cabbage moths. How are your plants fairing Tessa? |

Hi Pieface.. Good to hear your tomatoes are coming along fine does not take long once the flowers start..
Interesting about your Brandywine plant not being assaulted by the cabbage moths mine were in a big way, maybe there is some kind of smell on them they don't like.

| Ok sunny. I'll keep a close eye on it. Maybe the moths are trying to lull me into complacency before they strike! |

Thought I'd throw up a pic of the veggie patch as of yesterday evening.

I've tried to give the tomato plants alot more room this year to hopefully avoid the problems I ran into last year when the foliage all started overlapping.
Here's a shot I just happened to jag messing around which I really like for some reason...

I like that last pic too especially the way the hairs show up and the flowers against the light.
I can see the tomatoes growing well and the corn is looking good. Is there anything else? I really, really have to get something done with my eyes - I just don't want to admit I'm getting old

No Kito your eyes are up to the task. I haven't got a great deal going on at the moment. I have some cuke's growing but they are out of shot and still very small.
I'm putting all my eggs in the tomato basket by the looks of it |

You've got the basics - tommies, corn and cukes - what else do you need? The only other vegie I consider nearly essential is lettuce.
I do definitely need glasses though
Notice I didn't even make a comment about weeds... I can't talk as I madly weeded my vegie patch just before I took photos a couple of days ago

Darn! That was post weeding
I've asked Santa for a dutch hoe to hopefully excite me a little more. I think my enthusiasm was somewhat curbed by my winter disaster. The daylight savings is helping though as IO am finding more time for a potter as well as tending to my fishies...
