Silly me

You know how it goes Knock Knock on your Melons and if they sound hollow and have a dried stem on the end they are ready for picking, well this one was hollow alright with a big brown mark on top so I thought I had better cut it off even though the stem was green.

Back to the Kitchen cut it open
I have never seen a white Watermelon before
I have seen Pale pink and every pink you could think of even red.
This was a shock..

Even the seeds were green.

And it did not taste the best but I had to have a go

Took it down to the Girls..

I think they liked it..

Me well
In future I will wait till that stem is brown
Not to worry Folks there are still three more where that came from

Mary-Anne, are you sure it isn't a pie melon? They look very similar on the outside but no colour on the inside. Years ago, we had this 'watermelon' come up by itself and we impatiently watched these half a dozen or so big melons waiting for them to ripen... turned out to be a pie-melon My mother didn't mind as she loved the jam and she gave some melons away to various friends as they all used to love making their own jams, etc... I was very disappointed though.

Thanks Gail.. Pie Melon

You dont mean Paddy Melon do you I remember getting into a topic about them on GW a while back

I have no idea what it is Gail the plant just popped up in the garden bed, guess I will blame the birds again as I certainly did not plant it.

There was no taste whatever in it Gail, I will let the others go for a while yet, they look like watermelons..

Love your chooks MA, beautiful girls and glad they enjoyed their feast, least it was not wasted

My basic weeding rule: if they grow in rows they're flowers;
if they don't they're weeds.

Not paddy melon which is apparently prickly. I don't know what it is actually called as most I have been able to find are different from the ones my mother and grandmother used to cook with. The only ones I can find on google are smaller and different looking. The only references I can find are ones from the "olden days" and this little bit here http://www.recipezaar.com/library/getentry.zsp?id=886

They used to look exactly like a watermelon (fruit and plant) in size and outside colour, you didn't know what they were until you cut them. They didn't have much flavour. I think they were also called jam melons.

Yes I have seen plenty of paddy melons up the bush and of course played football with them great fun though not the best for the toes with thongs on.. And I googled too and they did not look like this one..Thanks for your time..

I feel they are not watermelons as they have been there too long and no taste at all..

Tis a mystery MA, did you plant them or just come up on their own

First MA if only we did'nt get pythons I'd love chickens like yours.
My mother always said brown eggs are best.
What breed are your chickens.

About the melons MA . I made melon and ginger jam over about 15 years .
You could grow you own melons or buy Jam melons readily .
They looked just like yours inside.
You can't but Jam melons now
Do people still make jam, not many I think.
Melon and ginger jam was delicious. Pitta.
