Posted - 04/02/2009 : 07:53:32 what were the top five tomato varieties in your garden this year? i ask...because i am trying to whittle down the variety of known (to me) tomatoes to 5 for next year. then i'll add 5 new varieties to explore...plus a few of my dwarves from the TV dwarf project...and THAT'S it. i really need to reign in the tomatoes. i grew so many this year that the freezer is full of sauce (not a bad thing) and there are so many rotting on the kitchen counter at the moment. thankfully...i'm at the end of round one of production...so not much new stuff coming in.
anyway...my top five from this year as i see them today:
1) black krim 2) big beef 3) accidental cross now named 'tessie's treat' 4) guernsey pink blush (cherry) 5) big white
if those were all i was growing next year...i'd be pretty darned happy.
on the list for 5 new varieties for next year are:
1) lucky cross 2) aunt ruby's german green 3) ? 4) ? 5) ?
so nice to have three spots left to decide on...and two white varieties from betty to choose from. gosh. it's starting to feel tight already!!!!
cranky people live longer. i'm going to live forever! perth, wa |

Posted - 05/03/2009 : 17:25:13 Looking at this site below i`m more than certain that it Carex `Goldilocks a lot of people call it brown tussock, in its first years growth they tend to be green, there second season they look more like whats in that photo below http://gardendelights.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~3302.asp
Below is a list of the rest of N Z grasses http://www.nzplantpics.com/sfeature_galleries/carex_gallery.htm
There`s a few tomatoes you have named there Val that i've never heard of,but you right there must be thousands of different varieties out there. |

Posted - 05/03/2009 : 15:54:53 I am totally overwhelmed by the number of different types of tomato. I have a few just coming into fruit - very late this year because we had such a cold Spring. I can't remember all the varieties, they were sent from Cosmic in Tassie. Imur Prior Beta and Sweet English are 2 of them. Black cherry is another. Oh I'll have to go and look at the labels............Purple Calabash, Wapsipinicon Peach, Black Zebra, Mortgage Lifter, and a couple who have carelessly lost their labels. We've had lots of volunteer Tommy Toes and Cherry toms so far, looking forward to the rest! Val |

Posted - 05/03/2009 : 11:58:06 Tessa have your grown cherokee purple before? It's a beautiful tasting tomato, I haven't managed to grow it all that successfully yet but I am tomato challenged but the ones I did harvest were really nice. I have some seeds if you want to try it.
medbury what are those lush looking grasses behind your last tomato pic, LOL, sorry I couldn't take my eyes off them! |
