Posted - 05/03/2009 : 03:48:47 Came across this bromeliad flowering for the first time yesterday. I've been wondering when it was going to start as we've had it a couple of years now. It is a bigger grower, each plant is about half a metre wide.

At long last the Monstera deliciosa is starting to flower. The flower hasn't opened yet and then another 12mths to wait for fruit but it is progress at least

Posted - 07/03/2009 : 18:58:28 They can grow big but like many plants can easily be kept smaller with the odd trim and they can make quite a statement in the right place. It is just personal taste though as we all have different tastes... I would rather have one of these to a rose any day but do enjoy looking at others gardens Next time a fruit is ripe you should give it a try though just remember to only eat the part that the skin has fallen off and no further

Posted - 07/03/2009 : 16:16:30 I am not keen on these plants and there were many monstera deliciosa under the B&B part of my house when I bought it, but it was a new house then and it was pretty bare. Now I have callistemons on this part of the house teh monsters are in the way and I just paid someone to dig a large one out and I took it to the tip. There are more under the steps and I like them there as it gives a green view between the boards. They are just in the wrong spot and if in a more 'tropical' spot, they might like nice. They have been flowering for a couple of years but I have ignored them - maybe I shouldn't have?

Posted - 06/03/2009 : 04:08:23 Gwen, they do like the growing conditions up your way and I can see they would get huge. Ours will grow a little slower here being drier and the cold winters will slow it down too.
Nice one Cheryl not too sure about the way you're holding that flower bud
