Posted - 03/03/2009 : 08:06:59 We've had this old home-made mower trailer for years just sitting around as we don't have a ride-on anymore so decided to make it useful again. Lined it with shadecloth, filled it with compost and planted the top with a common quick growing brom (can't remember the name but it gets a red centre) and around the sides we pushed in Cryptbergia 'Red Burst' and hung some pieces of Spanish Moss to fill in the gaps until it all grows.

The other coloured broms in the top are temporary - just sitting in pots waiting to be planted into the ground - they keep falling over if we sit them on the ground.
The old trailer was the first thing Ian ever welded and is made from old scraps that were lying around. The frame was from an old spring bed base that was lying under the house we used to live in and the tyres came from the same place - worked out that they were old Mini tyres - the tread looks like new still but the tyres are so old and hard they aren't usable anymore. The trailer sides were just scraps of weldmesh and the floor is old fence palings. The trailer is still as strong as the day Ian made it nearly 20yrs ago... and it had a lot of use for years.

Posted - 04/03/2009 : 10:18:15 I haven't been down to check as they were still working on the driveway up until late yesterday and each time we drove past I had to watch where I was going... didn't want to run over one of the virile young shirtless workers, did I?
I didn't have to walk down to check the mail, I left it until later when I was driving past. I forgot to look this mroning when I was going out

Posted - 04/03/2009 : 09:56:00 We're sneaking up on the back lawn slowly The son will complain too much if we take too much more but it will only be another couple of years or so before he moves out... hopefully so we can wait. We played a trick on him a couple of weeks ago when we were using hoses to mark out a new garden bed on the other side of the yard. My son was out for the day and after we had decided where to put the gardens, as a joke, we moved the hoses so they jutted out into his cricket pitch You should have heard the comments when he got home We can be cruel sometimes
The girls don't mind as much as they prefer to ride their bikes around the yard so as long as we left nice wide pathways for bike riding it is ok

Posted - 04/03/2009 : 06:25:50 Funny you should say that, my garden has encroached onto the entire back lawn

Posted - 04/03/2009 : 03:09:00 Thanks all. It will look better once the plants cover the trailer up and we plant the ground around it. This is in a newer extended area of the garden which hasn't been planted yet. The old edge of the garden was about where the black polypipe is... the gardens are slowing encroaching onto the flatter lawn area from both sides We've had to work around the cricket pitch area

Posted - 03/03/2009 : 12:26:51 Thanks, can't wait until it fills up. We chose the fastest broms we had that already had heaps of pups. Most of our broms we've only had for a couple of years so take a while to produce enough pups.
