Posted - 03/02/2009 : 13:45:26 I haven't got much going in the garden at the moment. The watermelons are doing well - this big one, easily 5 or 6kgs, is just about ready to pick soon - the kids ask me everyday if it is ready yet. There are a few others but nowhere near as big and still a while to being ready

The honeydew is getting bigger too, the biggest I've ever grown but the only one on the vine It has grown outside the fence so I hope nothing gets to it

Posted - 23/02/2009 : 03:38:57 That's not too bad a price, usually in the shops around 50c to $1 kg in season up to $2-$3kg early or late in the season. Get them cheaper at roadside stalls and the markets though.
That was a nice melon. Mary-Anne, you'd have to live very close to grab a piece of this one... it didn't take long to be demolished

Posted - 10/02/2009 : 10:00:58 Mary-Anne, that is the same watermelon that Danni is holding, just cut up. It is a Champagne watermelon - they are a yellowish colour inside. We've been growing them for several years now since we were given some seeds from the garden club at the school. They taste much the same as the pink/red ones... actually I think the taste is slightly better... but that could be because they are home grown The texture is also slightly denser I think. We all love them

Posted - 10/02/2009 : 07:23:56 The watermelon definitely passed the taste test We picked the big watermelon on Friday and had demolished it by Saturday - it was a struggle but I made it last two days. It weighed in at 8.6kgs. Turned out to be a sweet and juicy Champagne melon - the kids had fun mixing the seeds up when they helped plant them so there are 3 different types of melons mixed together in the garden and the only ones I can tell apart are the Moon and Stars vines though the champagne vine (now I know what it is) is doing the best of the lot.
