Posted - 10/01/2009 : 05:35:47 Hi there, I would like some help finding a possible identity for this tomato......

I bought a packet of tomato seeds which was a rainbow heirloom mix, seemed a good idea at the time but of course I don't know what colour to expect. The tomatoes are currently about 3.5 cm in diameter, have a lime green colouring with darker green marking (a bit hard to see too clearly in the photo), it's not a particularly large plant so far only about 1m high if that and is a "normal" leaf - not potato, and the leaf is green underneath not quite dark like some of my plants. If it turns out to be a green tomato, how do you know when they are ripe

Posted - 21/01/2009 : 03:52:14 Thanks Tessa, the insides will be sacrificed from the next Mystery Pink... With regard to where I got the seeds... I got them from a seller on Trade Me, pretty sure it was a person selling as babz nz, could have been kaiotes down in Otago but I don't think so as I last bought from them a couple of years ago and sure I only got these last year. They come in little plastic bags and the info in it says "TOMATO HEIRLOOM RAINBOW BLEND MIXTURE - A mixture of many of our Heirloom Tomato Varieties plus some other. Many shapes, colours and sizes. Inderterminate (68-110 days) 20 seeds". I still have 9 seeds left in the packet and am now fascinated as to what they may yield, shame it's too late in the season to do them now, not sure if they will be as good if I save them till next year.

Posted - 20/01/2009 : 16:40:15 okay...all you do, di, is find a little container or jar (i use a tiny plastic tub i got in a take-away dish. it had a dipping sauce in it. do you know the size?) squeeze the seeds from your tomato into that...and add about a tablespoon of water. put it somewhere you will not forget about it. somewhere in the way. in a few days...you will see that it has started to rot. often...you will smell it before you see it. *disgusting*. then take that foul miasma...tip it into a sieve...and wash the seeds. i don't mind rubbing the seeds all over the steel mesh of the sieve...until all the goo bits are gone and you're left with only seeds. then i *thwack* them from the sieve onto a paper towel to dry. i write their name on the paper towel for good measure...and then i let them air dry like that for about 3 days. then i pluck the seeds apart because often they are dried together...and i bag, label and date them. it's as easy as that...and providing you haven't forgotten them for too long in the fermenting process....you'll get close to 100% germination.

Posted - 20/01/2009 : 16:21:45 Beaverlodge??? I have no idea, all I know is subarctics. My next piece of research was going to be tomatoville to find out about seed saving as I read somewhere about soaking and fermenting. I dont know that I got it right last year as I dont think any of my yellow cherries have grown, but I certainly want to save some of my Mystery Pink

Posted - 20/01/2009 : 07:26:36 do you know how to do the fermenting thing, di? it helps a lot with the seed saving.
i should have asked sooner...but which subarctics are you growing? are they the beaverlodge ones?

Posted - 20/01/2009 : 03:18:12 BTW - the pink tomato was delicious, it was ripe although I would never have know from looking at it if I was waiting for it to turn red, it was way tastier than the subarctics, I am going to have to save some seed from it whatever it is :-)

Posted - 19/01/2009 : 18:28:41 I think I'm gonna pick it for breaky as it feels as soft if not a little softer than a couple of subarctics that I know are ripe.... breakfast me thinks

Posted - 19/01/2009 : 14:34:31 Is there a certain way they will "feel" if they are ripe?

Posted - 19/01/2009 : 14:29:36 di...i think they make those mixed seed packs when they've had an accident in the factory and lost track of what a seed is, or maybe had a mislabelling accident or so forth. i cannot see the point in it otherwise, as you are quite right, you can have no idea what is ripe and what isn't. i have a dead-wringer for your second tomato in the shape, size, and curled-up fringe department...but i doubt it could be that one. canabec super is definitely a pink tho, and looks exactly as what you are showing there...only truly pink in colour.

Posted - 19/01/2009 : 13:09:01 Hve another couple of mystery tomatoes, probably out of that heirloom rainbow mix.
Still waiting for the possible tigerellas to ripen, would love it if they are as that is a beautiful looking tomato, certainly as they ripen the green markings are fading....they currently look like this..sorry not a great pic

I have noticed this interesting one, doesnt quite show in the photos but it is quite pink rather than red, with a greenish top around the stem, interestingly it feels as though it should be ripe as it is starting to feel a little soft to a gentle squeeze, this is the problem with these mystery packages, don't know what they are so don't know if its ripe....looks like this, must emphasize it is quite pink in real life, not really showing in photos

also this little one, unfortunately wht you can't see is that it seems my bird chasing dog has stomped on it at the base by the looks of it and now its dying so I might never know what it was.....it is roma shaped with very distinct dark top and light bottom

Posted - 15/01/2009 : 22:17:14 thanks betty. they are a fairly mild tasting tomato, so i haven't grown them in a while since the tomato lover here likes the tart ones.
