I bought this one from the markets a couple of weeks ago. I have seen it before but don't know its name. I think they are often used as indoor plants though ours will be planted in the garden. Anyone know?

Well I am off outside to mow the front and side grass now, and Tony is going to do the back its 1.35 pm but its gone cloudy and windy so a ideal time seeing the Sun has disappeared..

So true,
I used to get up really early once and get out in the garden while still cool,now i`m still getting up really early but garden in the heat of the day instead,.......there`s something not right here isn`t there?    Jackie thinks i need a bit of this  she says i`m computer addict, |

Ligher on the animal food though.
I agree computers and cameras keep my brain going too..

Unfortunately that is true but even if one part doesn't work, you are still lucky to have an active inquiring mind... and a computer so you can visit GD and anywhere else in the world ... computers really are a godsend when the body isn't as capable as it used to be... also sometimes I would really love to have one of your scooters especially after spending 2hrs pushing a trolley and carrying enough groceries for two weeks to feed 4 kids with bottomless stomachs, a husband plus assorted animals like I have just done

I had to dredge into the old brain cells to try and remember what I learnt when I was studying it. The good thing about research is it keeps your brain active and young... just wish it did the same for my body

I have spent 2 very enjoyable hours and came to the same conclusion as you.
What a merry go round it was to knit all distant families together.

Apparently Kaempferia is a genus in the Zingiberaceae family so is a ginger, and gingers are distantly related to the Araceae family as they are both monocotyledons in the class Liliopsida. Maranta is in the Marantaceae family of the order ZINGIBERALES, subclass Zingiberidae, class Liliopsida. That's my thinking for the day It's a long time since I've delved into the different families - I had to dig out a couple of old books, I would have only been 17 or 18 when I studied them

Gail . You really have made my day . Thank you for finding that Ginger site .
So my Maranta is a Kaempferia pulchra. I would not have thought Ginger as its such a small plant.
I've learnt my new thing for today.I must now go back to see if the Maranta is related by family to Ginger.
Is Ginger classed in the Aroid family.Lots to research today . Pitta.

I was just looking for something else and came across this plant. It looks like Kaempferia pulchra, Peacock Ginger. There are lots of different leaf colours and flower style but some are very similar. There are a few different ones on this site but also saw plenty of others when I did a search. What do you think Pitta?

It looks the same flower. The picture I took doesn't do justice to the flower... when it first came out it looked very similar to yours. I will keep mine in a pot until it gets a little bigger and I can split it up then I will plant some in the garden.

MA , I hope you have no more side effects, you do go at things on fast foward.Take more rests during this oppressive weather.You not only need water when your hard at work but sometimes you need Staminade or Gateraid or one of those drinks. My Doctor recommends them this weather but no more than 2 glasses a day.It works .Pitta.

Gail this is my Maranta sp.
The flower when it first comes out is blue fading to white through the day.I'm hoping Ed can give a species name. Pitta.
