First a little branch was broken off... kids ... then a larger branch in the middle broke when we had a storm, now the whole centre of it is dying off for some reason. I don't know why - branches aren't broken, no obvious holes or marks - just started wilting then browned off. Not all the tree has browned off, one branch on each side is ok, still flowering - you can see one good one in the first pic. Very disappointing as it was looking so pretty with the flowers just starting.

We do have another one planted in another area and that is fine but much smaller and younger.

I have one too, that is suffering, mine is the pink/white flowering variety. Some branches are turning into sticks, others just just loosing leaves and wilting. I have noticed though, that if I cut back the dead branches the tree (about 4 to 5 metres) shoots nice new growth below the cuts. Might I suggest you do a bit of deperate pruning? Might work. I intend doing much more on mine shortly.

I do have another melastoma in another part of the garden. I have also been trying to grow from seed, last lot didn't work but we had an unexpected cold snap which I think they didn't like.

I think I'd be grabbing some cuttings off the live bits now in case you lose the lot.

Oh thats no good at all I hope it survives, they are as tough as, remember mine was burnt by the frost and only had one green leaf on it well that leaf is now a shrub 1.2 mts wide and 1 metre high 18 months later.

No dogs up around that area. The leaves don't seem to be eaten so doubt it is the Xmas beetle and if it was their larvae eating the roots you'd think the whole plant would wilt. The only think I can think of is some kind of borer.

I wonder if it is some kind of die-back, I was reading on one website it could be caused by the Christmas Beetle, do we have them, lightning was another cause..

You don't have any Male dogs visiting do you...

I am sure you are about the best "tree nurse" around but it is sad to lose a friend. Hope it recovers.

I just wish I could work out why, it was growing so well Hopefully the two bits that are still alive will stay that way. I see this plant every day as it is right outside the back door... well, on top of the bank above the back door

Does look a bit

My basic weeding rule: if they grow in rows they're flowers;
if they don't they're weeds.
