Hi! I am a stay at home mum of 2 very active and bright kids and we have a developing garden! We live in the Southern end of the Southern Highlands of NSW, so that presents its own challenges of frosts, poor soil and lack of water (no town water).

I am very keen on developing our garden and am constantly learning as I go. We have lived here for a year and the garden was unlived in and untended for at least two years before that. In a year we have moved a few trees, put in roses, herbs and veges and a few extra fruit trees. I am really interested in permaculture and learning more about it as I try and plan the next steps, but I am finding it hard to make decisions and know where to start.

While I have been interested in gardening for many years and read a lot, I may have some very basic questions for you all so please be patient with me!

Strawberry plants are fruiting now and there are still some around but I am rushed off my feet for the next week ...

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome - I'm probably a bit late for the strawberries am I?? Any free plants - especially edible ones are highly appreciated... Thanks Otamot, I've got his book and seen part of the vid at a permaculture work shop I did - but I would love to get my hands on the disc, so I'll look out for it. Cheers everyone!
PS Yes, it is a dragon, hiding on his bed of rocks as my son has a rock obsession...

welcome kitty, Im another permaculture fan too, I think it really is such a great way to garden, working with nature instead of against it. josh byrnes from ABC gardening australia did a permaculture backyard and they put it out on cd, you might be able to order it through your local library?

Hello Kitty ...nice to meet you and welcome.
Beautiful children.

Hi there Kitty. You are just up the mountain from me - not too far away although when I do drive up it is usually to Mossy and sometimes to the lovely nursery in Bundanoon. You are always welcome to visit - kid friendly here - with ponies etc - if you feel like a drive but no doubt you have your hands full. I am 35 mins east of Moss Vale and about 20 mins east of Fitzroy Falls.

I have been influenced by the permaculture folk around here and one who gardened for me in the early days here. Learning all the time. No nasties except glysophate and if you visited you would understand why although now I am even giving up the glypho on the beds and am walking around laying whole wet newspapers on 2 foot high weeds and then straw - can't get enough newspapers.

Love your pictures - and lovely children. I have masses of strawberry plants to give away and also masses of bog sage (pretty blue flower that looks good with roses. Like hundreds of both. Also dietes and am digging some for Dan in the morning. Let me know if you want strawberries before I lay the newspaper over them in the next few days (I do have enough planted for me and enough is enough).

Glad to have a sort of neighbour on the forum.

A dragon... that's what it is, didn't think it looked like a unicorn

Hi Kitty - welcome. I am originally from Western suburbs of Sydney...spent some time in Wagga, Albury and Canberra so have a little knowledge of your weather...from a distance of course. :) Love places like Bowral, Moss Vale, Berrima etc. But now I am firmly planted in Brisbane. Welcome! We are all on the gardening learning journey...glad to see you hop aboard.

The Southern Highlands of NSW and we are at the southern end of it - we are about halfway between Sydney & Canberra, halfway between Moss Vale and Goulburn. A very nice spot to be!
